The London of a century ago
The London of 100 years ago is both different and yet immediately recognisable in this set of "magic lantern" slides, showcased on the brilliant Spitalfields Life website. From High Holborn to Farringdon Rd, early 20th century London seems quieter than that of today, though that's perhaps more to do with the lack of cars than a perceived gentleness in the population. And though, to us, the people look a little old fashioned, alien almost, they're no doubt just the same – concerned about their work, health and future of their children. What they can't comprehend is a conflict, the Great War, coming slowly down the tracks… something that will change the city, and the country forever. This really is a calm before the storm.
